Last Thursday, New York Representative Weiner (D – Queens/Brooklyn) revealed that 151 members of the House and Senate presently accept government-funded and administered single-payer health care – Medicare. Weiner requested that the 55 of the 151 members who fervently oppose a public option in the health insurance reform bill relinquish their Medicare benefits.
Later this week, seniors in Arizona are calling out Senator Kyl for accepting Medicare benefits and opposing a public option for Arizonans who are in majority support of it. They will gather in front of Kyl’s office in Halloween costumes telling Kyl that it is inappropriate to receive Medicare and fight against a public option.
Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans President Doug Hart says, "Halloween is coming early for us this year. We are frightened by how out-of touch Senator Kyl is in the health reform debate. While he denounces a public option, he himself enjoys the benefits of a government-run and administered public option through Medicare. We’ve been tricked by Senator Kyl. We also want the treat of a real public option in healthcare reform.”
